BookBags

BookBags is an eco friendly manufacturer of hand crafted custom made fashionable purses and handbags. Taking recycling to a new level by reclaiming old hard back books & reusing the materials to create designer bags. Any leftovers get recycled.

The designer Kathy Kelly says that most of the books used are outdated legal books. She has been able to get the Erie County Law Library and three of the biggest law firms in Erie, as well as many smaller ones to recycle their books through BookBags.

The bags vary in size, and are dependant on the size of book or how many books are used.  They also vary in price, which is based on how much time they take to produce and the rarity of the book.  Each bag is hand-made, and completely unique so you will not find another bag like it. Kathy says that she is “still experimenting with different covers, but so far I’ve been able to get any non-paper covers to work”.

Right now each bag on average takes between 5-7 hours to produce, after Kathy gets the material off the books, washed and ready to be sewn. However that time has been greatly reduced from the original time frame 10-12 hours.

So far this year, BookBags has recycled over 4,500 pounds of paper and kept hundreds of book covers out of the landfill.

BookBags shows that one person can makes a difference and that reclaim, reuse, and recycle, when combined with good design works. It saves energy, waste, and the environment.
