Sophie Thompson, best actress nominee, wears mygreenlipstick.com at Olivier Awards

We speak to the award-winning actress about ethical fashion & why she chose to bring mygreenlipstick.com to the stage at the Olivier Awards.
Nominated for best actress, Sophie Thompson is perhaps most recognisable for her role in Eastenders as Stella Crawford. You might also remember her in blockbuster movies Gosford Park & Eat Pray Love. But it’s her recent success on the stage, in the theatre production Clybourne Park, that’s really got the critics talking. With her foot firmly in the spotlight, Sophie is keen to support the ethical cause, so we had a chat with her to find out why.
Hi Sophie!
“Hello!”
We’re very excited that you wore one of our dresses to the Olivier Awards! How else do you incorporate green fashion into your style?
“My style is charity shop, meets ethical, meets random but, to be honest, I don’t really have a passion for fashion. I just want to support, in my own tiny way, the people who do, i.e you! I am really endeavouring now to source clothes that are on the green, & I have always been a charity shop junkie, there's just so much 'stuff' in our World & it feels so much better to share & reuse what’s there.”
Fantastic. Do you try to live a ‘green’ life outside of fashion as well?
“We endeavour to be Green but there is always a lot of room for improvement!
We recycle like loons, but have a distinct lack of solar panels. My husband would love a windmill – but I don't think we'd be allowed one in our small London garden.”
A windmill would be very ambitious…
“I have an allotment – but we fall pitifully short of living off it – as my growing skills are a bit of a caution & crucial planty, harvesty times are often working times too!
But I love it, & have planted lots of trees & palmed off endless chutneys on my pals. We also have a green bin, which is great, & there's a fab recycling plant up near us where I can often be found hulking awkward bundles into skips.”
Wow, that’s quite a bit. As a consumer, which ethical issues in fashion do you feel most aware of'?
“The ethical issues in fashion I feel most aware of are very much not wanting to be part of a society that thrives on slave labour. We have so much, and we waste so much, & there are such simple & brilliant ways to redress that balance (literally!).”
We agree. And green fashion isn’t so different to mainstream fashion in appearance. It’s the behind-the-scenes bit that changes & it’s durability….. What does fashion mean to you?
“Clothes to me are about feeling comfy & yourself.”
And what drew you towards 'mygreenlipstick.com'?
“I was drawn towards 'mygreenlipstick.com' as I was searching for a special occasion dress that was Ethical and I found one & am thrilled! I am genuinely chuffed to be able to go to a do in something so lovely, and so sound, it just feels better all round.”
Thanks, Sophie! We hope you enjoy the dress & continue to support the cause. March 2011
